Good Old Boat Racing Regatta

This was submitted in 2005 but leaving posted in case it is an annual event

Hello, All.  I am sending you this note to let you know about the Good Old Boat racing regatta (quite informal racing) to be sailed in the Annapolis, MD area in October.  If you are not a Chesapeake Bay (or environs) sailor, I apologize for taking your time.  If you are a Middle East Coaster, please read on.  I apologize for this note being late this year.  I've been too tied up lately.  If you can make it, I guarantee you will enjoy it.

We established the Good Old Boat Regatta (yes, the GOBR) four years ago as an alternative to sailing competition with carbon fiber and canoe bottom boats with no woodwork in sight.  This is a non-profit social effort established by a couple of "good old boat" owners.  After we started the effort, the good people at Good Old Boat Magazine loved the idea, and became a sponsor with publicity and awards.  You might have seen the write-up on the race in Good Old Boat Magazine last Fall. Heritage Marine Insurance has also joined us as a sponsor.

The races are run in the Chesapeake Bay the first two Saturdays in October (2nd and 9th this year).  Racing can coincide with visits to the Annapolis Boat Shows.  There is a free waterfront party with refreshments after each racing day on scenic Mill Creek off Whitehall Bay near the Bay Bridge.  Free anchoring spots available with tender service.  You can enter for either day or for both.  Awards for each race day.  Entry fees are $25 for one day and $40 for both days.  You don't need to be a regular racer to enjoy  this event.  The camaraderie among the owners and crews of distinguished boats is one of our primary goals.

We have established a number of formats to include starts for full keels, fin keels, manufacturers, spinnaker, non-spinnaker, ladies only, and one design (and any other good idea or combination that comes along).  All we need is enough entries to form a start for a particular group.  The only boat requirement is that the first hull of your boat type had to be built no later than 1975.  If your boat does not have a handicap rating, we will work out something equitable.

By the way, in this message, "we" is/are Charlie Husar (owner of a CAL 25 and a CAL 40, and Sailnet CAL list member), and Don Frye (Pearson Triton owner and good guy).  Our sailing club, Shearwater Sailing Club, sponsors the event.

Don't worry about the application due dates.  We use those to estimate awards, but we can take later applications.  Just send a note or call.
